IRS: Making taxes due payments online
To make online to the IRS, you have two main options: (1) by making an account, or (2) by paying as a guest, without an account. We recommend you make an account as it will allow you to track your payments; however, this article provides step-by-step instructions on how to proceed without making an account.
To make online tax payments to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) without making an account, direct your internet browser to https://www.irs.gov/payments. Here, you have two options for payment methods:
- Pay Now with Direct Pay: This free method allows you to pay your taxes using your checking or savings account, similar to an electronic check. You will need your checking and routing number.
- Pay by Debit Card, Credit Card or Digital Wallet: This method allows you to pay your taxes using a payment card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, etc.) or a Digital Wallet (PayPal, etc.). However, you will pay a processing fee.
We recommend you choose Pay Now with Direct Pay. Because of the additional fees, using a debit or credit card is not recommended. To jump straight to this point, click here.
After you have selected your payment method:
- Click Make a Payment to enter the Direct Pay system.
- Reason for Payment: Select Balance Due.
- Apply Payment To: Select 1040.
- Tax Period for Payment: Select the previous year.
- Select Continue and then confirm your choices.
You will now be in the Verify Identity screen. This will ask you to verify information from a previous years' tax return to confirm your identity. You will first select the most recent tax year. Then, you will need to enter the filing status for that tax year. This can be found on your income tax return or by calling our office.
Next, you will enter the information of the primary taxpayer. The primary taxpayer is the taxpayer listed first on the tax return.
Next, you will enter your Bank Account Information (account number and routing number).
Before you conclude, be sure to request email confirmation! Save this confirmation for your records. We recommend also uploading it to our secure portal: https://phillipsgroup.clientportal.com or emailing it to documents@phillipsgrouptax.com.
