Audit Protection

63% of new IRS audits are of middle-class taxpayers, according to the Wall Street Journal (source).

Here's the good news: your overall likelihood of being audited - statistically speaking - remains low. Furthermore, the rate of audits involving clients of The Phillips Group continues to be well below the national average.

However, with good news comes some not-so-good-news.

  • The Internal Revenue Service has been hiring thousands of staff - many of them auditors to focus on higher-than-average earners and small businesses.
  • The majority of new IRS audits (63%) has been against middle-class taxpayers.
  • The IRS' most recent strategic plan involves a sharp increase in audits.

We know that the IRS has promised to focus its audits on millionaires and billionaires. However, audits of these individuals take substantially more time and the IRS is less likely to succeed. By their own admission, the IRS prefers to audit middle-class taxpayers instead.

We can offer Peace of Mind.

As in years past, The Phillips Group is once again offering our Tax Audit Protection Program for a limited time. Enroll today and receive tax notice support and audit representation at no additional charge.

Tax Notice Support

On average, the IRS issues 220 million notices each year! Save yourself the headache, and let your expert tax firm handle them. Simply forward to us any income tax notice or letter you receive. Our highly-experienced team will review, research, and respond on your behalf.

Tax Audit Representation

Audits are complex, involving many hours of time from tax associates, accountants, and administrative personnel. As is standard practice in our industry, we charge hourly for our team's time on large projects like this. Here is a sample of our fixed hourly fees for audits:

  • Administrative Staff: $150 per hour
  • Accounting Staff: $250 per hour
  • Tax Staff: $400 per hour
  • Partner: $600 per hour

Because these projects are so time-consuming, we require upfront retainers (minimum fees) before they begin. The retainer for audits of personal returns is $3,000; for audits of business returns, it is $5,000.

Of course, many audits are substantially more complex, and the fees can vary greatly. Here is a real example of a client's recent invoice for an especially complex audit (redacted for privacy).
